To end the first week of 2022, here are the upcoming VR games in 2022 I was most excited about, for Quest, PC VR and PlayStation VR. I’ve grouped them by genre, the same way as in the video. Release plans are as they stood in January 2022.

Action

  • Ultimechs: a futuristic mech fighting game where you need speed, precision and rocketry to beat your opponents. It’s by Resolution Games, the multiplayer studio behind Demeo, so I expect it to be good.
  • Samurai Slaughter House: a physics-based open-world combat game and sandbox. Use stealth, creativity or brute force against humans and demons. Its black and white comic art style looks stylish.
  • Tea for God: a VR adventure that uses impossible spaces with procedural generation, so you can keep moving endlessly within your own play space. Very unique. There’s already a well-received demo, and the full game is due this year.
  • NERF Ultimate Championship: a multiplayer arena shooter with NERF guns. It looks awesome, and the beta should start soon. I’m ready.
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR for Quest, announced last year. After last year’s excellent Resident Evil 4 port I have high hopes. No release date yet, but I think it’s everyone’s most anticipated Quest game this year.
  • Hitman 3 on PC VR: previously only on PlayStation VR, now coming to PC VR this month with full motion controller support. I always thought it needed that.

Adventure

  • Horizon Call of the Mountain: the official Horizon Zero Dawn spin-off we heard about yesterday, along with the official PSVR 2 specs. It’s a PSVR 2 exclusive, hopefully coming to PC VR later as usual. All we have is a teaser and the news that it’s meant to show off what PSVR 2 can do, so it has to be good.
  • The Last Taxi: you’re the last human taxi driver on Earth, with an unexpected passenger who reveals a dark conspiracy. Story-based, with multiple endings driven by your choices.
  • Cosmonious High: Google’s VR studio, the team behind Job Simulator, is back with a bright and cheerful game in an alien high school. You unlock powers to fix up the place, go anywhere, interact with any character, and resolve or cause as much chaos as you want.
  • Zenith VR: my personal most anticipated game, because I love MMORPGs and there’s so much to do in it. The second closed beta is coming soon, so release shouldn’t be far away.
  • Wanderer: worth watching even just for the graphics. An escape room game with action arcade sequences and what looks like a mind-bending time travel story.
  • Hellsweeper: a roguelike combat game where you’re an undead immortal with elemental magic and weapons, taking on the challenges of the underworld. It’s by Mixed Realms.

Party

  • Among Us VR: Schell Games is making the official VR port of the multiplayer teamwork and betrayal game, for up to 10 players. It’s a bit late now the hype has worn off, but it’s still a really fun game to have in VR.
  • QuestHaven: finally, what looks like a real Dungeons & Dragons VR game. It’s a tabletop simulator where you build environments and import game rules to play almost any tabletop RPG, like D&D, Pathfinder or Shadowrun. VR is so fitting for this.

Platformer

  • Moss Book II: our favourite little mouse Quill returns. Moss is my top favourite Quest platformer: you control a character in third person and still feel emotionally connected. I can’t wait for the sequel. We don’t know yet whether it comes to more platforms than PSVR, but Moss did, so I still have hope.

Simulation

  • Lost Recipes: Schell Games again, with a VR cooking game where it looks like you’ll learn recipes from cultures around the world and from the past, with playful narration. This developer always makes innovative games.
  • Cities VR: Fast Travel Games brings Cities: Skylines to VR. You build, but you also design, construct and direct traffic, while handling the economy, emergency services and more. I used to love sims like SimCity, so I’m truly excited about this one.
  • The Last Clockwinder: a Studio Ghibli-inspired automation game where you build contraptions out of your own clones in a cozy sci-fi world. As a fan of Studio Ghibli, I’m excited for this fantasy world.
  • Ultrawings 2: the sequel to the popular flight game, now an open-world aerial adventure where you earn in-game money with missions. I’m not into flight simulators because they’re too tricky for me, but this one is made to be easy to understand.
  • Garden of the Sea: like Animal Crossing in VR. You wake up on a small island in a magical world, grow your garden, look after the local creatures, furnish your home or sail off for resources. It’s been in early access on Steam for a few years and releases in full for Quest and PC VR this year. I’ve tried it, it’s cute.
  • Little Cities: yes, a second city builder this year, this one by nDreams. Design the layout, place amenities and make a perfect little city your citizens love (or at least hope they do). It looks more playful and cozy.

Survival

  • Green Hell VR: I love the flat game. The VR version is a standalone one but not very different: you’re lost in the rainforest and do what you can to survive. What sets it apart is that it gets really challenging, because you also deal with mental health and sickness.
  • Propagation: Paradise Hotel: the original Propagation was a short survival horror experience that became wildly popular. This is the full game, set in an eerie hotel that’s not much of a paradise, because it’s full of zombies.
  • REQUISITION VR: a four-player online co-op survival game in a post-apocalyptic world with, you guessed it, zombies. You explore abandoned areas and craft weapons from any objects you find. The interactions look good.

Visual novel

  • Dyschronia: Chronos Alternate: set in an artificial marine city where you’re a special supervisor unravelling a big mystery. It’s more about watching than interacting, so it’s not for everyone, but if you enjoy manga or anime you might like it.
  • Sushi Ben VR: another visual novel, with a unique way of framing the story in comic panels around you. The developer calls it a VR slice-of-life anime game about a sushi bar. I’m guilty of loving manga, so I’m looking forward to it.

More upcoming VR games in 2022 and beyond

Two more with little information so far: a sequel to the popular VR boxing game The Thrill of the Fight, coming this year, and a Peaky Blinders VR game called The King’s Ransom, by the developers who made the Doctor Who VR game.

And there are big ones I’ve mentioned before, still without updates: Assassin’s Creed VR, Splinter Cell VR, System Shock 2, the Panzer Dragoon remake and the next Boneworks-like game on Quest. Some of the games from my previous upcoming VR games video are coming sooner, so watch that one for more details.

What I’m most excited for

I really look forward to another epic year for VR. PSVR 2 and Project Cambria are coming alongside all these games. My own most anticipated is Zenith, because I love MMORPGs, followed closely by Moss Book II, Cities VR and GTA San Andreas on Quest.
