Here we are in Elden Ring in first-person mode, and it’s incredible. This is LukeRoss’s Elden Ring VR mod, and it brings a few new features: several camera modes besides first person, an invisible mode and even a way to slow down time. This was an early look before the mod’s release, so you may spot some glitches. LukeRoss shares his progress with supporters on Patreon. Below: what it’s like to play, the mod’s settings, and how to install it.

Elden Ring, for newcomers like me

Elden Ring is a fantasy action RPG that got a terrific reception. FromSoftware is known for its Souls games, which means super challenging combat and environmental storytelling, and this is no different. It has a dense open world you’re free to explore on your quest to become the Elden Lord, and how you get there is up to you. The world is full of tough dungeons and insane monsters.

I’d always wanted to play it, and I’m a total noob. I played a little flat-screen before this and restarted the game for the video, so you’ll see me struggle, but there are almost no spoilers.

First person: beautiful and brutal

Everything is in 3D, and it gave me goosebumps. Magic spells look awesome up close, the trees and landscapes are beautiful, and standing right next to a character while she talks to you is just cool. Even if you’ve already played the game, I think you can still enjoy it this way.

It’s hard, though:

  • Dodging and rolling are much tougher in first person, and rolling is rough on the stomach. You need strong VR legs.
  • Getting hit from behind happens without you noticing.
  • Boss fights are a real test. I made it through my first one with magic, a drink to restore my MP and attacking right after the boss swung.
  • Horse riding on Torrent works, but fighting on horseback in first person was terrible for me. I died.

Third person: how I prefer to play

Third person is the game as it was meant to be played, but with far more 3D depth, which is really cool. It’s much easier, so if you’re new to Elden Ring you’ll probably want to try this mode too. I still died (and when you die you lose your runes, the game’s currency, until you go back and pick them up), but I managed a nice parry.

The Elden Ring VR mod’s quick menu and settings

There’s a new quick menu that’s much easier to use than in LukeRoss’s earlier mods. Open it any time with the pause button on the keyboard, or Select plus Start on a controller, and use the shortcuts to change settings.

  • Hide the menu to get something like a photo mode, so you can watch epic moments from any angle.
  • Tourist mode makes you invisible, so you can explore without fighting monsters all the time.
  • Game speed slider to make the game slower or faster.
  • Presets to save settings you like and switch between them with two button presses.

Take your time with these, because they can make first-person VR much more fun, and veterans get new ways to explore the game. I enjoy third person with the closer camera at normal speed. First person is tough for me because the combat is fast with lots of rolling and dodging, though the presets help.

Two things to know:

  • No online features with the mod. When you launch the game you get a pop-up to choose between offline VR and flat-screen online, so switching is easy.
  • No motion controllers. You play with keyboard or a controller.

How to install the Elden Ring VR mod

  1. Launch Elden Ring at least once in desktop mode.
  2. Download the mod from LukeRoss’s Patreon and extract the files.
  3. In Steam, right-click the game, then Properties > Local Files > Browse, to open the folder with the Elden Ring executable.
  4. Copy the mod files into that folder.
  5. Run the mod’s config file. It installs the mod and configures the game with the graphics options you choose.
  6. Launch the game and pick VR.

Once it’s running you can change anything in the system menus, except motion blur, which should always be off. I also recommend turning off camera auto-rotation, unless you can handle automatic camera movement.

Known issues

LukeRoss told me the mod is very much a work in progress. Mounted telescopes only work with the default game camera, and when I opened the quick slots menu it went outside my view. He usually releases a mod and then keeps improving it, so it should get better over time.

Is it worth trying?

Yes. Even as a noob I found it incredible: seeing the Lands Between in 3D gives the game an immersion it never had flat. First person is a real challenge for a game this fast, so expect to spend most of your time in third person unless you have strong VR legs. You can support LukeRoss and get the mod on Patreon, and you’ll need Elden Ring on Steam.
